Towards the end of the seventies and the beginning of the eighties, Cali did not have a medical center capable of offering highly complex services or developing the new medical technologies that were advancing in the world.
Faced with this limitation, specialists were forced to refer their patients to other cities or countries, an unacceptable situation for a city with a renowned medical history and a long-standing commitment to the health of its community.
Initially, there was an attempt to implement this type of service at the University Hospital of the Valley (HUV), but it was not possible to develop a private unit within that institution.
La Fundación Valle del Lili It began operations on March 3, 1986 at the Centenario headquarters, offering stress testing and clinical laboratory services.
Shortly afterwards, cardiology consultations were added, led by doctors Martín Wartenberg, Jorge Araújo G., Jorge Velázquez Noreña and Pastor Olaya Rojas.
Doctors Jairo Sánchez Blanco and Hugo Martínez Villamaría also began their specialization in cardiology.
At the end of 1986, the gradual opening of the Nephrology and Dialysis, Diagnostic Imaging, Oncology, Orthopedics, Lithotripsy and Nuclear Medicine units began.
In August 1993, the Foundation moved to its current location, thus consolidating its growth and projection as a highly complex institution.
The construction of the main headquarters was made possible thanks to the support of the PIFE organization, belonging to the Rockefeller Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
This organization connects retired American professionals interested in contributing to developing countries, and that's how the Fundación Valle del Lili It had the collaboration of a renowned architect who contributed his experience and knowledge to make the project a reality.

The initiative began in 1983, led by cardiologist Dr. Martín Bertram Wartenberg Villegas, with the purpose of building a highly complex institution in Cali to meet the growing need for specialized medical services in the region. This pioneering vision marked the starting point of what is now the Fundación Valle del Lili, a benchmark in health, education and research in Colombia and Latin America.
On March 3, 1986, the Fundación Valle del Lili It opened its doors at the Centenario Headquarters, located on a property loaned by Dr. Vicente Borrero. There, the first outpatient services began, always maintaining the vision of developing highly complex medical care that would respond to the needs of the region.
On July 7, 1994, the official inauguration of the Main Headquarters took place with the presence of representatives of the National Government, benefactors, medical staff, and strategic partners. This milestone marked the beginning of a new era for the institution, consolidating its position as a leading healthcare provider in Colombia and Latin America.
For over 27 years, the institution has been providing new opportunities for life. This milestone has solidified its position as a national leader in highly complex transplants, distinguished by its comprehensive approach, patient safety, and excellent clinical outcomes.
