Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging
What does this specialty do?
Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging is a medical specialty that uses radioactive substances, alone or combined with drugs, for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases.
Unlike radiology, whose studies are primarily morphological, molecular imaging allows the observation of biological processes in real time, performing functional studies that facilitate the early detection of diseases and the accurate evaluation of the response to treatments.
In addition, the service performs metabolic therapies , treatments that release radiation in a controlled and targeted manner to destroy diseased cells—such as cancerous ones—without significantly affecting healthy tissues.
Diseases it treats
The service focuses on pathologies in adults and pediatric populations, including:
- Thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, lymphomas, gastric cancer, among others.
- Coronary and pulmonary diseases.
- Dementias such as Alzheimer's.
- Gastrointestinal disorders (gastroparesis and gastrointestinal reflux).
- Endocrinological pathologies (hyperthyroidism and hyperparathyroidism).
- Kidney diseases (hydronephrosis and urinary tract infections).
- Osteoarticular disorders (bone pain, bone and joint infections, metabolic bone disease).
Procedures and treatments
The service performs diagnostic studies such as gamma scans and hybrid SPECT/CT gamma scans , as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT) with state-of-the-art technology.
It has four rooms for metabolic therapies , spaces designed for treatments that use controlled radiation. All procedures are non-invasive , expose the patient to low levels of radiation, and comply with radiation protection standards.
Most procedures require prior preparation.
The service has hybrid SPECT/CT gamma cameras, 128-slice PET/CT scanners, evaluation offices, and specialized rooms for metabolic therapies.
