What does the Clinical Laboratory service do?

The Clinical Laboratory offers a comprehensive diagnostic service through the analysis of biological samples to confirm, rule out, monitor, estimate risks and define therapeutic strategies.

It includes support in microbiology, immunology, genetics, hemostasis, and clinical pathology, offering reliable, timely, and clinically useful results. It is geared toward both outpatients and inpatients, with international quality standards and integration with clinical units to ensure data-driven medical decisions.

Diseases it treats

The Clinical Laboratory provides diagnostic support for the monitoring and control of multiple medical conditions, facilitating early detection, treatment monitoring and disease prevention through reliable and validated results under international standards.

Lab tests

The laboratory offers a wide range of routine and specialized tests, including:

Tests that do not require scheduling:

  • Cytogenetics: Chromosomal studies such as karyotyping and FISH to detect genetic abnormalities.
  • Flow cytometry: analysis of cell populations in hematological diseases.
  • Molecular genetics: PCR to identify mutations, cancer markers and post-transplant follow-up.
  • Hemostasis and special hematology: coagulation tests, thrombophilia and anticoagulant monitoring.
  • Microbiology: cultures, identification of infectious agents, and molecular testing.
  • Immunology: evaluation of immunodeficiencies and immune response.
  • POCT (Point of Care Testing): rapid tests performed directly at the care site.
  • Hematology: It studies blood and its components (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets) to diagnose diseases such as anemia, leukemia, or infections. It includes tests such as a complete blood count, peripheral blood smear, and cell counts in different bodily fluids. 
  • Immunochemistry: Tests that allow the measurement of hormones, tumor markers, proteins, vitamins, among others, using ELISA or chemiluminescence, useful for clinical diagnosis. 
  • Transplant immunology: Evaluate donor-recipient compatibility using HLA compatibility and Crossmatch to prevent rejection of transplanted organs or tissues. 
  • Immunodeficiencies: It studies alterations of the immune system when it does not function correctly, in the measurement of immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM to search for allergens, and other complementary analyses for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases. 
  • Sequencing: Analyzes DNA or RNA to identify genes, mutations, or pathogens, useful in molecular diagnostics and personalized medicine. 
  • Pathology: It examines tissues and cells with special stains and immunohistochemistry from biopsies and cytology for the diagnosis of diseases, especially cancer.

Tests that do require scheduling:

  • Platelet aggregation: Dihydrorhodamine (breathing burst test) Request an appointment at ext. 3152.
  • LSA tests: It must be managed through the Functional Transplant Unit. 
  • Genetic testing: request an appointment at ext. 3067 or through the mail Infolaboratorio@fvl.org.co
  • Biological parentage test: Request an appointment at ext. 2767 (business hours 6 am to 1 pm) and ext. 3385 (business hours 2 pm to 5 pm)

Tests that cannot be taken at alternate locations (Estación, Tequendama, Alfaguara): 

  • Platelet aggregometry.
  • Platelet adhesiveness (formerly called: bleeding time).
  • Respiratory samples (nasal swabs, nasopharyngeal swabs, aspirates).
  • Intrafamilial cytotoxic drugs.
  • Cryoglobulins.
  • Quantiferon Alpha Mycobacteria.
  • Dihydrorhodamine (DHR) or Granulocyte Respiratory Burst.
  • Viscoelasticity in blood.
  • Arterial or venous blood gases.
  • Paternity tests (only available at the Tequendama branch).

Tests that cannot be taken on site Limonar:

  • Platelet adhesiveness (formerly called: bleeding time).
  • Chlamydia antigen by IFA.
  • Intrafamilial cytotoxic drugs.
  • Vaginal samples such as cytology, smears or HPV.
  • Sperm culture.
  • Paternity tests.
