Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery

The Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery service treats congenital or acquired pathologies of the heart and great vessels in children, adolescents and adults with uncorrected congenital heart disease.

We work in an integrated manner with anesthesiology, cardiology, intensive care, and specialized pediatrics, and also have support from areas such as radiology and the blood bank. Care is provided under a multidisciplinary model that guarantees safety, quality, and excellence in every procedure.

  • The service addresses all types of congenital heart disease such as ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, coarctation of the aorta, tetralogy of Fallot and transposition of the great arteries, among others.
  • It also addresses highly complex cases such as hypoplastic left ventricle syndrome and heart diseases that require heart transplantation.
  • It has advanced ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support, which increases safety and effectiveness in the management of pediatric patients with severe cardiovascular diseases.

Corrective surgeries of varying complexity are performed, from simple heart conditions such as ventricular or atrial septal defects, to medium-complexity procedures such as atrioventricular canal defect and transposition of the great arteries.

In highly complex cases, pathologies such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome and heart transplantation are managed. Advanced techniques such as valve surgery in children, hybrid surgery, and circulatory support procedures are also performed. All of this is done in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary environment using state-of-the-art technology.

Subspecialties

  • Valvular surgery in children (valve plasty, Ross surgery, hybrid mitral valve treatment, pulmonary valve management, and prosthetic right ventricular outflow tract conduits)

  • Pulmonary endarterectomy surgery

  • Circulatory support and heart transplantation

Before the consultation or surgical procedure, it is important to have up-to-date studies that allow a comprehensive assessment of the heart and other organs.

A transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiogram, an aortic CT angiogram, and/or cardiac catheterization are generally required, depending on the patient's condition. In addition, blood tests are ordered to evaluate thyroid, kidney, lung, and liver function, ensuring a safe and personalized assessment.
