General Surgery
What does this specialty do?
The General Surgery Service provides comprehensive surgical care to patients over 17 years of age with elective, urgent and emergent pathologies.
It performs the initial management of trauma patients in coordination with the Trauma Surgery team and works in an interdisciplinary manner with other specialized services. As a university hospital, it integrates clinical care, teaching, and research, supported by advanced technology and evidence-based protocols to ensure safe and timely care.
Diseases it treats
The General Surgery service treats abdominal pathologies and surgical emergencies, including:
- Acute appendicitis
- Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis in their different presentations
- Diverticular disease
- Acute pancreatitis
- Intestinal obstruction
- Gastrointestinal perforations
- Abdominal wall hernias
- Gastrointestinal bleeding not a candidate for endoscopic management
- Postoperative complications
In addition, the service addresses:
- Abdominal pain of surgical origin
- Acute abdomen
- Initial management of digestive neoplasms detected incidentally or in damage control settings
When required, patients are promptly referred to specialized oncology services for comprehensive management.

The service performs open and minimally invasive surgical procedures for the treatment of abdominal and emergency pathologies, including:
- appendectomy
- Cholecystectomy
- Hernia repair
- Intestinal resections
- Abscess drainage
- lipoma resection
- Diagnostic biopsies
- Surgical management of postoperative complications
- Approach to the acute abdomen
In addition, the service performs:
- Placement of implantable catheters for chemotherapy
