What does this specialty do?

Geriatrics is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine focused on the comprehensive healthcare of older adults throughout their lifespan, regardless of age. Its objective is the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions associated with aging, seeking to preserve functionality, autonomy, and quality of life. The service is based on a comprehensive and multidimensional geriatric assessment that analyzes the interaction between the medical, functional, cognitive, emotional, and social aspects of the older adult.

Diseases it treats

The Geriatrics service provides comprehensive care to older adults, addressing acute and chronic illnesses, as well as conditions specific to aging, including:

Frailty syndrome
Cognitive impairment
Eating and nutrition disorders
Alterations in affect and behavior
Instability
Frequent falls
Fractures
Gait disorders

In addition, the service provides comprehensive care to elderly people who require:

Major surgeries
Cancer treatments
Rehabilitation processes following prolonged hospitalizations

The approach includes:

Comprehensive geriatric assessment
Health risk management
Care goal orientation
Palliative care and relief of suffering in the context of aging

Procedures and treatments

The Geriatrics service is based on five models of care, applicable in outpatient consultation and hospitalization, aimed at older people (60 years or older):

Preventive Geriatric Check-up: Evaluation from age 55 to identify risks of disease, cognitive decline, disability and guide comprehensive planning for old age.
Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment: Aimed at older people with complex conditions, it allows the detection of problems such as polypharmacy, risk of disability, falls, recurrent hospitalizations and functional or cognitive decline.
Pre-surgical Check-up: Multidimensional risk assessment in elderly people requiring major surgery, with pre- and post-surgical optimization.
Onco-Geriatric Evaluation: Specialized approach to the elderly patient with cancer, aimed at adjusting treatments, estimating risks and supporting decision-making without age discrimination.
Telemedicine Care: Teleconsultation and tele-advice for patients, families and caregivers, especially when there are travel limitations or they are in other regions or countries.

Exam preparation

For specialized care in Geriatrics, the following is recommended:

Please wear comfortable shoes.

Wear usual assistive devices (hearing aids, glasses, cane, walker or orthosis).

Come with a cohabiting companion, if possible.

Submit previous medical history and results of studies not registered at the institution.
