Fundación Valle del Lili took part at the Cali 2017 Half Marathon with a clinical study of 130 runners among 2105 registered. The study included medical doctors and health personnel from the hospital, medical students from ICESI University and the whole process was directed by Juan Pablo Martinez, Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon from both institutions.
The Boston marathon was associated with 13% of hyponatremia among runners and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the sodium sample in a race performed in Cali, Colombia, with high temperatures and humidity. The results showed no cases of hyponatremia, instead, we found 6 cases of asymptomatic hypernatremia (7.4%). This was associated with lower total of fluid intake.
According to our results, to avoid hypernatremia, we suggest a total fluid intake between 500-1000 ml for the next Cali Half Marathon and races performed with similar distance and joining the same weather.
The Doctor Juan Pablo Martinez, Orthopedics Specialist and Sports Traumatology of Fundación Valle del Lili , was one of the speakers invited at 11th Biennial ISAKOS Congress at Shanghai (China) with the conference : Musculoskeletal Injuries in Runners During the Cali 2016 Half Marathon
