What is the target population of the service?

The service comprehensively treats patients with malignant diseases, including the most frequent, such as: multiple myeloma, acute and chronic myeloid and lymphoid leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, myelodysplastic syndromes and others, as well as benign entities such as thrombosis, anemia, thrombocytopenia and coagulation disorders, such as hemophilia, thus providing support and initial treatment until bone marrow transplant procedure.

Assistance processes provided include:

  • Comprehensive medical care of adult hematological patients.
  • Formulation, administration and follow-up for multiple chemotherapy and immunotherapy protocols.
  • Autologous, and allogeneic identical and haploidentical bone marrow transplantation. 
  • Infusion service.
  • Biopsies and bone marrow aspiration.
  • Lumbar punctures and intrathecal chemotherapy.
  • Catheter placement service for chemotherapy application ensuring safety in the administration of medications.
  • Unidad Funcional de Cáncer (Functional Cancer Unit, UFCA in Spanish) for comprehensive and differential care of cancer patients.
  • Research Center in oncological diseases, with research protocols on new technologies and drugs not yet available in the country.
  • Teaching in the hematology field, provided under assistance and education agreements with ICESI university and other institutions.
  • Academic and multidisciplinary processes and services: 

-Multidisciplinary oncology board, hematopathology board, genetics and molecular oncology testing board, bone marrow transplant board.

The hematology service has a high quality staff, with hematology sub-specialist professionals experienced in bone marrow transplantation, as well as in teaching, certified both by our Institution and ICESI university. The whole service receives the help of a comprehensive support team, consisting of general practitioners, nursing staff trained in cancer patient care, psychology and palliative care.
