Introduction

The Neurosurgery Service has been in operation for 25 years at the Institution and attends both adult and pediatric patients requiring neurosurgical treatment, including cranioencephalic trauma and spinal cord injuries, intracranial hemorrhage, endocranial hypertension syndrome, congenital and degenerative spinal pathologies, lumbar pain, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, involuntary movements, spasticity, chronic pain and congenital craniofacial abnormalities.

The service has specialists and sub-specialists for each one of the above pathologies. Each patient’s management is discussed by the team and actions to be taken are decided by consensus.

  • Permanent availability for the management of neurosurgical emergencies.
  • Routine, high-complexity and minimally invasive spine surgery.
  • Functional surgery (Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, involuntary movements, spasticity and chronic pain).
  • Management of congenital defects of the central nervous system.
  • Multidisciplinary support by all of the Institution’s specialties, particularly, Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, Intensive Neurological Care, Neuro-Oncology and Neuroanesthesia.
