The Fundación Valle del Lili (FVL) laboratory has received the Level I Certification granted by the NGSP (National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program), indicating that its performance is traceable with a worldwide standard, being the level of greatest analytical requirement and that for the second year it has been reached by a hospital laboratory in Colombia.
Globally, there is a program that measures the quality and accuracy of HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) measurements known as NGSP. The NGSP certifies and monitors laboratories around the world that seek excellence in HbA1c test performance to ensure their reliability. This Traceability Certificate is awarded for successfully completing bias testing where specific methods, reagent lots, calibrator lots and capillary electrophoresis instrumentation are used.
The certification criteria for Level II Laboratory are the same as for manufacturers. For Level I laboratories, the certification criteria are stricter. The Fundación Valle del Lili achieved Level I, the highest with capillary electrophoresis technology.
What is the HbA1c test?:
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic insulin deficiency disorder, with a high risk of developing complications in the eyes, kidneys, peripheral nerves, heart, and blood vessels. The prevalence in Colombia is very high: last year 1,294,940 people were diagnosed with diabetes. It is estimated that one in 10 people in Colombia suffers from this disease, being one of the main causes of death in people between 30 and 70 years of age. (Minsalud)
For its diagnosis, the doctor currently sends the patient to perform the HbA1C test which is a protein in the red blood cells that is filled with glucose in patients with this morbidity, so it is crucial to measure it with great accuracy.
The result of a HbA1c test indicates the average blood glucose level for the last two to three months of the patient. When it exceeds a value of 6.4%, medical accompaniment is needed.
Congratulations to our laboratory and the professionals committed to the safety of our patients and maximum reliability in their results.
