Pain management

Feeling pain is normal after a surgery or procedure. It could even reach places close to the wound. For this reason, it is important that you follow medical instructions to treat it:
  • Take your pain medications (analgesics) according to the schedule and dose established by your physician. 

If, even when taking the medication, the pain does not go away and, on the contrary, increases or appears suddenly, consult your treating physician.

It is important to take measures to prevent the wound from getting infected. Both the patient and the family should wash their hands constantly with soap and water in the following situations:
  • After going to the bathroom. 
  • When handling food. 
  • After touching pets. 
  • Before touching the dressings that covers the wound.
  • When you feel your hands dirty or have visible dirt.

When going to the bathroom: 

Monitor changes in the frequency, amount and characteristics of urinary or fecal elimination: (color – smell). Tell your physician if your stools are red or black. 

Constipation:  

Eat a fiber rich diet (fruits with peel, green vegetables, cereals, whole grain products) and drink plenty of fluids, as indicated by your physician.
